Sherdog Smashes: Labor Day Special
Combat sports never sleep. Even with major organizations taking some time off for Labor Day in the U.S., plenty of offerings from around the fringes fought for eyeballs on a wide-open weekend. Whether watching combat sports news, wild happenings or bonkers highlights, there is always something for someone. We want to give you the latter of those three in this series titled “Sherdog Smashes.” What is it? A feast of carnage worthy of those seated on the “Just Bleed” throne.

Even amateurs can come up with decent highlights. Ask “WingedC,” also known as Malcolm Schuyler, his thoughts on the subject. At Backyard Fighting Championship 13, the staple of those Street Beef-style events Schuyler faced off against Nasir Robinson, who goes by “Vegeta.” Late into the third round, Schuyler activated his Kaioken and shimmied his way in to blast “Vegeta” with a left-right-left combo and a final left hand to put him down. It might not have been over 9000, but it was certainly a finishing sequence.

Admittedly, this Hexagone MMA 33 matchup was on a silver platter for Bozidar Trivunovic, as a 6-1 fighter with a 100% finish rate against a .500 adversary. Unsurprisingly, the favored man prevailed in dominant fashion, with Alessandro Capone having nothing to offer back after 66 lopsided seconds. While the counter to the leg kick was solid, the follow-up ground-and-pound was borderline apocalyptic.
Muay thai with little gloves again? You know it. Asadula Imangazaliev took on near 300-fight vet Panpayak Jitmuangnon in the flyweight headliner of One Friday Fights 122 and something happened. Out of nowhere, a consciousness-depriving head kick slumped the losing man in an extremely unusual way.

This trend of “influencer boxing” is just the 2020s version of celebrity boxing, hearkening back to when unexpected Tang Soo Do artist Danny Bonaduce busted up Barry Williams and Donny Osmond years back. Now, the term “celebrity” and “influencer” have broadened their definitions to the point that someone with a high enough follower count on social media is considered famous. Enough griping about Misfits Boxing 22, which had some of the worst officiating on record and an MMA match involving Dillon Danis that won’t be on Fight Finder. Two ex-UFC names Darren Till and Luke Rockhold decided to strap on 12-ounce gloves and duke it out in a ring, and would you be surprised that one of them got splattered like Steve Nelmark against Tank Abbott?

We’re still on the fence about Dirty Boxing, as it makes up an entirely new rule set that does not have approval from many states. It reminds us of Pop MMA in Russia, where leagues grow like weeds with all sorts of wacky rule changes to “make fights more exciting.” Whether it does or not, the sample size is still too low, but dang if it doesn’t bring about some fun knockouts. Case in point: 47-year-old Hector Lombard thought he could hang with a middling MMA fighter—no disrespect to James Cannon, who sports a 9-10 record as a pro—and had his jaw jacked. Couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy.

Also in Dirty Boxing, former UFC flyweight Tyson Nam continued his post-Octagon reign of terror, lumping up Bellator MMA veteran Ricky Bandejas in the first round. The whole video is worth watching, even if only the Bandejas fight was this past week.
