Edwards has spent the majority of his career on the cusp of stardom. He has lost in two world title fights but showcased his abilities as an elite fighter in both meetings. He has faced top-tier competition in Johnny Eblen, Gegard Mousasi and Lyoto Machida. Although he’s the more overlooked Edwards brother, it hasn’t stopped him from pushing himself to new heights. When Edwards entered the tournament, many expected him to perform well, but the Englishman has dominated the competition. After starching Impa Kasanganay and cruising to a decision over Joshua Silveira, Edwards rides into the championship as the favorite against a dangerous but less experienced contender.
On paper, Dalton Rosta has the makings of a middleweight megastar. The American Top Team product has the looks of a Herculean fighter and works the mic well, but his clinch work leaves much to be desired. Rosta dominated Sadibou Sy in the opening round but showed holes in his game against Aaron Jeffery in the semifinals. Jeffery forced Rosta to fight with his back against the cage and stayed in his chest all night. Rosta looked to wrestle, but the fight remained in a phone booth at close quarters. Jeffery caught him in between shots and outworked Rosta in key exchanges. Despite the heart and grit that Rosta showed in the Jeffery rematch, many believe he was gifted the split decision.
With that in mind, Rosta has to prove himself. In his first five-round fight as a pro, Rosta has to show he’s the nastier competitor and willing to make this fight as ugly as possible to pull out the victory. Edwards is a deadly kickboxer and knows how to determine range and risk while keeping a relaxed guard. This allows him to stay fresh and sharper in the later rounds. Rosta is the more explosive athlete and will look to work off blast doubles and quick combinations. Against Edwards, he needs to stay active and force the Englishman to counter and wrestle against the fence. Edwards is difficult to pin down, but he can be inactive at times in fights. That will provide Rosta the opportunity to push the pace and control the cage. Unfortunately for Rosta, Edwards is a deceptively dangerous fighter on the inside. His knees and elbows are so fluid that they often find their mark and can cause severe damage. If Rosta tries to come inside, Edwards has the skill set to make him pay for it. Although Rosta has the discipline and the camp to blossom into one of the PFL’s brightest stars, his style relies heavily on athleticism. He lacks the wrestling acumen to take Edwards down at will, and the Brit’s experience gives him the edge in the striking department. If Edwards plays with his food, however, Rosta’s pace could make this fight close on the scorecards.
